JC Auto Design will be temporarily closed while we move and get set up in the new location.

The printer is working again!

It wasn't easy to get the printer back up and running. After some troubleshooting, I determined it required a replacement motherboard. Unfortunately, ​​MakerBot discontinued parts and support for the generation of printer I have, and I needed to find a different motherboard that would work. After searching for a while, I found one that might work. It required quite a bit of soldering to transfer over the connection terminals, which was time consuming. 

Once the new motherboard was installed, I needed to test and calibrate the machine to make sure everything worked the way I needed it to, and this took a little more time than I thought it would as well. Testing and calibration is complete, and I am able to resume printing again!

Now that the printer is running, I am catching back up on existing orders, and building up a small inventory for popular items. I have opened up orders again for my products, but keep in mind, the standard processing times still apply. More info here.

Replacement parts have been ordered to repair the machine, but in the meantime, we are unable to print parts until it is repaired. For now, most of our products have been listed as "backordered" and you will be unable to purchase any items until we are back up and running. I expect this to be less than two weeks of downtime, but that depends on the repair being performed correctly. 

If you would like to receive an update on when we are back up and running (and receive a coupon toward your next order as a thank you for waiting), please visit the CONTACT page, and submit an inquiry with your email address mentioning what parts you were interested in purchasing.

For those that have pending orders with us, you will receive a specific email in the next couple of days to detail if your order is included in the delay or not. After receiving many requests to make a battery plate for the short wheelbase configurations of the Vaterra Ascender we finally have one ready to order.

Short Wheelbase Ascender Battery Plate

The new short wheelbase battery plate for the Vaterra Ascender is available to order now. This option allows those using the WB1 and WB2 versions to mount the battery fully to the chassis, thus making the set-up legal for sanctioned competitions that require it. 

The battery plate offers mounting positions for shorty packs, as well as more standard sized packs mounted sideways. Also, there is space to mount your electronics up front, making wiring easier, and keeping a forward weight bias.

Installation is easy and quick. Please check back on the product page for install instructions soon.

Defective Nylon PArts

After some research, it has come to our attention that some of our Nylon parts may have been printed with a batch of bad plastic. It is difficult to identify exactly which parts were affected.
We are offering a free replacement for any broken Nylon part purchased before 02/01/2016. 
In order to claim your replacement part, please visit our CONTACT page and submit the following:
  • Name (that matches the name used for Paypal)
  • Paypal email address
  • Purchase date (approximate if not known)
  • Part and a description of how the part broke
In addition to the above information, you may need to provide a picture of the broken part for reference. Please note: normal processing times may be delayed for replacement parts.
]]><![CDATA[Temporary Extended Order Processing Times]]>Fri, 20 Mar 2015 03:37:02 GMThttps://www.jcautodesign.com/archived-news/temporary-extended-order-processing-timesEffective today, 03/19/15, I will be updating the expected time frame for order processing. Orders may now take up to 2 weeks after payment to ship. Click the "read more" link to find out more about the order process, and why I will be extending the time frame.
By the end of March, I will be taking on a new professional position that will take a large portion of my schedule. The extended processing times allow for me to have time to process orders in the free time around the new schedule.

A explanation of the order process:
When an order is placed, I receive an email notification of the order and place it in my processing queue. Orders are typically processed in order, but this depends on the items in the order and whether they are in stock or not.

For parts that need to be printed: 
I have a separate queue for the printer to make sure I am maximizing the print operation. Parts made from the same material are often batched together with other orders.
Most nylon parts are dyed after printing and are done in a batch with other parts. The dye process is messy, and easiest if I am processing multiple parts at once.
After parts are printed, there is typically some post-processing, including removing support material or any "flashing" (unwanted plastic drips and strings) as well as drilling or tapping holes. This process is done by hand on each printed part.

For parts that are water-jet or laser jet cut:
These parts are supplied by another company. When an order is placed for one of these items, if I don't have these items in stock, I will place a batch order with the supplier. Each supplier has a different time frame depending on their current workload and amount of material on hand, etc. Once the parts arrive, there is still typically some post-processing that includes drilling holes to the correct size, de-burring, bending,etc.


Once the parts are in stock and post-processed:
Each part is individually packaged and a shipping label is created. After all the items in the order are confirmed, the package is sealed and dropped off at the local post office. Typically this is done in the evenings after the PO closes, and tracking information usually doesn't update until the next day.
Tracking numbers are saved to the Paypal transaction, and shipping status can be checked by following the link through Paypal. For international orders, tracking may continue through your local carrier once it arrives in their system. 


To update or cancel an order:
Your order can be updated or canceled at any time before it is processed to be shipped. 
After your order is ready to be shipped, I will try to work with you to update or cancel an order, but there may be non-refundable charges that will be incurred.

We've added options for the Vaterra Ascender, as well as an extended option for the SCX10.

The Ascender RULR provides the same benefits as the original SCX10 Version, with the added benefit of reducing torque twist. (Torque twist is more noticeable in the stock Ascender due to the gear ratio within the axle.)

The SCX10 extended RULR provides options for those using larger motors, larger drive shafts or larger or mirrored transmissions. This option however requires a new upper link or modification to your upper link.

  • 35mm diameter rotor fits most 1.9 and 2.2 wheels (smaller or larger diameter available on request)
  • Vented, Cross-Drilled or smooth options available
  • Fits any SLW hub wheel (other bolt pattern hubs available by special request)

As you may see from the above information, these are extremely easy to customize. 
Lets say you wanted Smooth face 2mm thick rotors for the rear, and cross-drilled + vented face, 5mm thick rotors for the front... you can have it! 
**Tip - Get a few different thicknesses to fine tune your width.

Turn-around time for these is around 3-4 weeks or so (due to Shapeways' turn around time). After the first batch or two, I will carry a variety of these options in stock, to help reduce that wait time. Special order options will still usually see around 3-4 weeks turn-around time.

Hardware is not included, but keep in mind the extra thickness will usually require longer screws to ensure the hub is secure to the wheel. (Except 2mm thick spacers will usually be able to use your existing hardware.)
